Long, slender precision parts, especially clamped between centers, come with their own challenges:
deflection and distortion, e.g. from heat treatment, lead to out-of-roundness in the part. Until now, only highly experienced specialists have been able to correct such errors in the grinding process – at considerable time expense.
Dynamic beats Static
Because steady rests have traditionally been static machine components, we had to completely redefine the steady rest for grinding applications.
With a unique positioning accuracy in the sub-micrometer range and the ability to dynamically correct the position of the workpiece during the grinding process, we have created a new product category that meets increasing demands for accuracy, even in previously ›difficult‹ workpieces – WOTAN® Dynamic Rest.

With our newly developed dynamic steady-rest system, we combine decades of grinding expertise in a unique combination of sensing technology, software and active position correction. Measuring probes monitor dimensional accuracy and correction requirements, while a WOP™ Touch module fully automatically controls one or more WOTAN® 2‑point dynamic rests for real-time position correction.
The entire grinding process takes place in closed-door machining without manual operator intervention – saving time, increasing precision and preventing errors. Distortion is actively ground out – for maximum precision without the barrier of expert-only know-how. Integrated into WOP™ Touch, it eliminates the need for your employees to have many years of experience in steady-rest operation.
